Nationals and Orioles Face Off Amid Struggles in the 2025 Season

Washington, D.C. – The Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles are set to clash in a pivotal series as both teams battle through rough patches in the 2025 MLB season. The Nationals enter the series with a record of 9-13, slightly trailing behind the Orioles at 9-12.
Despite their similar standings, the teams have significant differences in performance metrics. Washington has scored 93 runs but allowed 113, while Baltimore has scored 98 runs and given up 118. Both teams have struggled with run prevention, primarily due to poor bullpen performances.
Nationals’ closer Kyle Finnegan, sporting a 1.86 ERA, has saved eight of the team’s nine victories. However, the rest of the bullpen has been less reliable, with Lucas Sims and Colin Poche posting shocking ERAs of 15.26 and 15.88, respectively. Former Oriole Jorge López also contributes, but with a less severe 9.72 ERA.
“Getting into the Nationals’ bullpen will be key for a successful series,” said a Camden Chat analyst. “It’s a good strategy against any team.” However, the O’s offense must get back on track to take advantage.
The Nationals’ batting statistics reflect ongoing struggles, with the team posting a .229 average and a combined player WAR of just 1.2. Notably, Dylan Crews, a former second overall pick, has had a disappointing start with an OPS of only .505.
Meanwhile, Baltimore looks towards key hitters like Jordan Westburg and Adley Rutschman to ignite the offense. Both players have faced challenges at the plate, with Westburg emerging from a hitless streak and Rutschman transitioning from five consecutive hitless games to a better showing in a recent game against the Reds.
The Orioles pitching staff has also faced scrutiny, especially starting pitcher Dean Kremer, who averages fewer than five innings per start and has been criticized for poor strikeout rates and home run counts.
As the Orioles prepare to face left-handed pitcher Parker of the Nationals, their struggles against lefties add pressure to the lineup. So far, the team has managed only a .570 OPS against left-handed starters.
The upcoming series holds major significance for both teams. A loss for the Orioles could lead the club to a disappointing record of 10-14 or worse, as they continue their search for consistency in a challenging season.
