Amed Rosario Washington Nationals Signing

The Washington Nationals announced Wednesday that they have signed infielder Amed Rosario to a one-year contract worth $2 million, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. To make room on the roster, right-hander Joan Adon was designated for assignment. Rosario, represented by Octagon, is expected to fill a utility role for the Nationals.

Rosario, 29, was a consistent performer for the Cleveland Guardians from 2021 to 2022, serving as their everyday shortstop and posting a combined .282/.316/.406 batting line. However, his performance dipped in 2023, leading to a trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he played a utility role. After a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Rays and a return to the Dodgers, Rosario ended the 2024 season with the Cincinnati Reds.

Over the past two seasons, Rosario has maintained a .270 batting average, but his on-base percentage (.305) and slugging percentage (.379) have been underwhelming. Known for his speed and bat-to-ball skills, Rosario has struggled defensively, particularly at shortstop, where metrics like Defensive Runs Saved and Outs Above Average have consistently rated him poorly. He has since expanded his versatility, playing second base, third base, and all three outfield positions, with second base being his most competent defensive role.

Despite his defensive shortcomings, Rosario remains one of the fastest players in Major League Baseball, ranking in the 91st percentile for sprint speed, according to Statcast. His arm strength has also improved, ranking in the 72nd percentile last season. However, his lack of range and low walk rate (career 4.3%) have limited his overall impact.

With the Nationals, Rosario is expected to compete for playing time at third base, where prospects Brady House and Trey Lipscomb are also in the mix. House, a former first-round pick, struggled in Triple-A last year but remains a top-100 prospect. Lipscomb, acquired in a trade with the Kansas City Royals, is further behind in his development but could push for a major league spot with a strong start to the season.

The signing reflects the Nationals’ strategy of adding experienced players to complement their young core as they continue their rebuild. Rosario’s versatility and speed make him a valuable asset, even if his offensive and defensive metrics have declined in recent years.
