4 Nations Face-Off: Historic NHL Tournament Kicks Off Feb. 12

MONTREAL, Canada — The top NHL players from Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States will clash in the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off tournament from February 12-20, showcasing a best-on-best format. This groundbreaking event will take place in Montreal and Boston, positioning these countries in an exciting international hockey competition.

NHL.com and NHL.com International have curated historical rosters, drawing from previous standout players by going back five years at a time. Each country’s roster will feature 13 forwards, seven defensemen, and three goalies, lined up in anticipation of a thrilling tournament.

The focus today is on Team Finland’s potential roster from 1985, crafted by writer Varpu Sihvonen. Jari Kurri, a standout player for the Edmonton Oilers, is expected to lead the Finnish team. In the 1984-85 season, Kurri achieved career highs with 71 goals and 135 points, earning him the title of Most Valuable Player for Team Finland.

In addition to Kurri, other notable players like Petr Skriko, a rookie with the Vancouver Canucks, made their mark that season by scoring 21 goals. However, the tight grip of Finnish representation in the NHL was notable, as there were limited Finland-born centers available at the time.

The defensive lineup includes Teppo Ruotsalainen, who delivered an impressive 73 points with the New York Rangers and a solid partnership with defenseman Kim Siltanen, known for his performance with the Hartford Whalers. Siltanen contributed significantly to his team with 45 points throughout the season.

On the goaltending front, the only Finnish goalie active in the NHL was Juha Kamppuri, who faced challenges with a 1-10-1 record. His performance underscores the uphill battle Finland’s hockey representatives faced in the league during the mid-1980s.
