Washington Nationals Baseball Game Highlights

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Nationals defeated the New York Mets 5-4 on Friday night, ending the Mets’ seven-game winning streak. With two outs in the ninth inning, James Wood‘s single brought home CJ Abrams, who scored the winning run.

The Nationals, now 12-14, have won five of their last seven games. Dylan Crews led the team with three hits, including a pivotal triple that set up the comeback. Washington entered the final frame trailing 4-3 after a strong eighth inning by the Mets.

New York, who held an 18-8 record, appeared in control when Mark Vientos hit a three-run triple in the eighth to take the lead. However, the Mets’ bullpen collapsed in the ninth, allowing the Nationals to rally.

In the bottom of the ninth, Crews tripled off relief pitcher Ryne Stanek (0-1) before José Tena tied the game with a single. After a couple of groundouts, Wood delivered the game-winning hit with a soft single that slipped under second baseman Jeff McNeil‘s glove.

Mets starter Kodai Senga went six innings, allowing two earned runs, while Nationals starter Jake Irvin pitched 7 1/3 innings with one run allowed and four strikeouts.

This game saw the return of both Jeff McNeil and Francisco Alvarez from the injured list, as they each contributed with a hit in their season debuts.

The Nationals are looking to build on this victory as they prepare for the second game of the series against New York, set for Saturday.
