NBA Draft Class Extensions: Who Will Sign Big Contracts This Summer?

ORLANDO, Fla. — This summer, NBA teams will make significant decisions regarding the 2022 draft class as players become eligible for contract extensions. From July 1 through the day before the regular season, first-round picks can negotiate new deals.
Major names like Paolo Banchero, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams are projected to secure lucrative extensions, with teams assessing their performance and market value.
Banchero, an All-Star last season, is expected to receive a full max contract from the Orlando Magic despite an injury setback during the current season. His averages of 25.9 points and 7.5 rebounds indicate that he is a franchise cornerstone.
“We aim to build a balanced roster around him,” said a source close to the organization. “Banchero’s potential is immense, and we want to ensure he stays in Orlando.”
Holmgren, playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder, is also on track for a significant deal. He has showcased his abilities with averages of 15.0 points and 2.2 blocks per game, while the Thunder aims to maintain their championship posture.
“Holmgren’s versatility makes him integral to our future,” said a Thunder executive. “We are committed to ensuring he is rewarded for his contributions.”
Other notable candidates include Jabari Smith Jr. and Dyson Daniels, who could potentially miss out this summer due to their respective teams’ financial strategies. As the market for extensions tightens, teams need to evaluate where to allocate resources carefully.
The process will unfold as players and teams negotiate throughout the summer leading up to the season, with restricted free agency looming for those who do not secure extensions.
