NBA Draft Prospects Shine Amid NCAA Tournament Action

RALEIGH, N.C. — Several NBA draft prospects competing in the NCAA Tournament are showcasing their talents, making a case for top selections in the upcoming draft this summer. Freshman guard VJ Edgecombe led the Baylor Bears past No. 8 Mississippi State in the round of 64 on Friday, adding to his rising draft stock.
Edgecombe, a 6-foot-5 explosive wing, has drawn comparisons to NBA greats like Dwayne Wade and Russell Westbrook due to his all-around skill set. “VJ doesn’t have to score to impact the game. He gets comparisons to Dwayne Wade, Russell Westbrook, and the thing that those guys did is their athleticism and their ability to rebound, get assists, defend—it affects the game,” said Baylor head coach Scott Drew.
Baylor is set to face off against Duke on Sunday at 12:40 p.m. MT, a match that could feature the potential top two overall picks in the draft. Cooper Flagg is widely viewed as the consensus No. 1 pick, but Edgecombe aims to make a strong impression during this critical matchup.
“It’s no secret that Cooper is at the top of the class, so I’ve got to rise to the occasion,” Edgecombe added, looking to lead his team to an upset victory.
NBA scouts will be closely watching this game, as both players present unique skill sets that could significantly impact their team’s futures.
Also drawing attention are Illinois guard Kasparas Jakucionis and Colorado State guard Nique Clifford, both of whom could attract interest from the Jazz with their late first-round pick. Jakucionis impressed with a near triple-double against Xavier, scoring 16 points with 10 assists and 9 rebounds. He plays with toughness on both ends of the floor and has a keen offensive feel.
Clifford also aims to elevate his draft stock; he contributed 14 points, 6 assists, and 8 rebounds in an upset win over Memphis. “Nique is a high-impact player who affects winning in numerous ways and embodies the modern-day NBA wing,” said his coach.
As the tournament progresses, excitement builds for Jazz fans hoping to add elite talent from this deep draft class. Edgecombe, Flagg, Jakucionis, and Clifford are set to showcase their skills, providing a thrilling preview of the future stars of the NBA.
