NBA’s Ja Morant Draws Ire Again with Finger-Gun Gesture

MIAMI, Fla. — Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant has sparked controversy once again by mimicking a shooting gesture with his finger during a game against the Miami Heat on Thursday night, despite receiving a warning from the NBA earlier in the week.
Morant’s gesture occurred shortly after sinking a 25-foot three-pointer with 7:51 remaining in the first quarter. As he retreated on defense, he extended his right arm while posing as if he were shooting a gun with his left hand. The Grizzlies ultimately triumphed over the Heat with a score of 110-108, sealing the victory with a last-second shot from Morant.
Sources reported that on Tuesday, Morant and Golden State Warriors guard Buddy Hield both received warnings from the league for similar gestures made during a game. While the NBA determined the celebrations were not intended to be violent, it deemed them inappropriate. Both teams were notified about the unacceptable displays.
Post-game, Morant acknowledged the criticism surrounding his actions, stating, “I’m kind of used to it. I was pretty much a villain for two years now. Every little thing, if somebody can say something negative about me, it’s going to be out there. So, yeah. I don’t care no more.”
The 25-year-old two-time All-Star has faced serious repercussions in the past for gun-related incidents. In March 2023, he was suspended for eight games after a video surfaced of him brandishing a firearm on Instagram Live while visiting a nightclub in suburban Denver. His subsequent suspension at the start of the 2023-24 season lasted 25 games due to another appearance with a handgun on social media.
Throughout Thursday’s game, Morant was involved in other noteworthy moments as well, including scoring 30 points overall and hitting a pivotal shot at the buzzer, solidifying his role as a clutch player. However, rather than celebrating his performance, the aftermath of his finger-gun gesture took center stage in the media.
Despite the NBA’s previous warning, Morant has displayed a defiant attitude towards his critics. “I’m well aware [of the talk],” he continued. “I’ve pretty much been a villain for two years now.”
Following the encounter, an NBA spokesperson declined to comment further on the matter. Meanwhile, Morant’s actions will likely keep him in the spotlight as the league navigates the balance between on-court celebrations and maintaining decorum.
This incident illustrates a larger narrative surrounding Morant’s career and public perception, with many commentators emphasizing the responsibilities that come with being a high-profile athlete.
