NBA Playoff Race Heats Up as Teams Secure Spots

CLEVELAND, Ohio — With less than a month remaining in the 2024-25 NBA regular season, the playoff landscape is quickly taking shape as teams finalize their postseason aspirations. The top six teams in each conference secure automatic playoff berths, while the seventh through tenth teams will compete in the play-in tournament scheduled for April 15-18. Following the play-in round, the playoffs will commence on April 19.
The Eastern Conference is currently led by the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have established a significant advantage over the defending champion Boston Celtics. Both teams have clinched playoff spots, with the New York Knicks as the third team also guaranteed a postseason appearance. Concurrently, the Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Washington Wizards have been eliminated from playoff contention.
The Cavaliers are poised to claim the No. 1 seed for the first time since their 2015-16 championship season. This achievement follows a remarkable regular season that featured two separate winning streaks of at least 15 games. “We knew we had the talent to compete, and this season is proving it,” said Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff.
Boston, striving for its record-extending 19th title, is expected to finish the season in the No. 2 position. The Celtics secured their playoff status by finishing as the top seed last year and maintaining an impressive playoff streak of 11 consecutive seasons. “We feel confident in our depth and experience heading into the playoffs,” said Celtics forward Jayson Tatum.
The Knicks are celebrating their third straight playoff appearance for the first time since the 2010-13 seasons. After advancing to the semifinals in the last two years, they are determined to make a deeper run. Coach Tom Thibodeau noted, “Each year we learn more and evolve as a team, and we hope to carry that into the postseason.”
Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers have both ensured spots in the play-in tournament, looking to overcome previous playoff disappointments. The Detroit Pistons, with a drastic improvement from last season’s 14-68 record, will also participate in the play-in after missing it in 2019.
In the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder have clinched the top seed for the second consecutive year. The Thunder’s record against Eastern Conference teams stands out at 24-1 this season. Head coach Mark Daigneault praised the team’s consistency, stating, “This group has shown a commitment to winning that is unmatched. We’re ready for the challenge of the playoffs.”
Houston Rockets, trying to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2020, are in contention for a high seeding under second-year coach Ime Udoka. The Denver Nuggets, led by three-time MVP Nikola Jokić, aim for another strong postseason run after making the playoffs for the past six years.
Also in contention are the Los Angeles Lakers, now under the guidance of first-year head coach JJ Redick. With aspirations of a deeper playoff journey this year, the Lakers are striving to improve from an early exit in the previous season’s playoffs.
The Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, and Minnesota Timberwolves are all fighting for play-in spots, while the Los Angeles Clippers aim to solidify their place in the playoffs again. With the intensity of the competition soaring, the upcoming weeks promise exciting matchups as teams hustle for the best postseason positioning.
