NBC’s Craig Melvin Takes Break as Mike Tirico Steps In

NEW YORK, NY — Craig Melvin announced he will take an extended break from NBC‘s Today show, with sportscaster Mike Tirico stepping in as his replacement. Melvin’s leave comes as he plans to spend spring break with his family, while Tirico will co-host for a week.
The announcement was made during Thursday’s live broadcast, where co-host Savannah Guthrie revealed that after Tirico finishes his coverage of a golf event, he will join them in studio. “And by the way, we’ve got some special news! After Mike gets his fill of golf, all next week he’s going to join us right here in Studio 1A,” said Guthrie.
Tirico expressed his enthusiasm about filling in, stating, “I was so excited about it and then I just watched Jon Hamm‘s live audition and now I’m out. I can’t do this!” He quickly added, however, that Melvin had previously shown his ability to handle hosting duties effectively.
Melvin, 45, has been co-hosting on Today since January when he stepped into the role previously held by Hoda Kotb. He expressed that being a part of the show is a significant professional honor. “There are so few truly venerable institutions left in television … and being part of one isn’t something I take lightly,” Melvin said.
This break will mark a brief absence for Melvin, but fans have expressed excitement about Tirico’s temporary takeover on social media. Comments on the Today Instagram page included praises for Tirico, with fans noting, “This should be great as Mike is so fun!” and another saying, “Welcome Mike, I’ll be watching!”
This isn’t Melvin’s first hiatus from the show. He has previously taken time off for personal matters, but his significant role as co-anchor has kept him in the public eye.
In the world of morning television, such changes are not uncommon, but the affinity viewers have developed for both Melvin and Tirico promises a week of entertaining programming. Tirico has been with NBC Sports since 1990, making him a familiar face to many sports fans. He has covered various major events, including the Olympics and numerous golf tournaments.
Meanwhile, the Today show continues to adapt and change as it has since its debut in 1952, providing viewers with the latest news, entertainment, and special segments each morning.
As the show gears up for this upcoming week, fans and colleagues alike are eager to see how Tirico will blend into the morning routine alongside Guthrie and fellow hosts.
