INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The second round of the 2025 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is ramping up with thrilling matchups as teams compete for a chance to advance to the Sweet 16 this weekend. Saturday’s games featured notable wins and standout performances from several seeded teams.

Purdue, the three-seed in the Midwest Region, had an impressive victory over McNeese, defeating the Cowboys 76-62. Trey Kaufman-Renn led the Boilermakers by scoring 22 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Coach Matt Painter celebrated his eighth appearance in the Sweet 16, with C.J. Cox adding 11 points and Fletcher Loyer contributing 15 in the win. Purdue will now face the winner of the Houston versus Gonzaga matchup in the regional semifinal.

Likewise, the tenth-seeded Arkansas Razorbacks took down the second-seeded St. John’s by a score of 75-66. Arkansas head coach John Calipari, celebrating the victory over his long-time coaching rival Rick Pitino, noted the importance of capitalizing on opportunities. “It’s a different kind of tournament, and each game feels like a new challenge,” Calipari remarked. Karter Knox and Billy Richmond III were pivotal in the win, scoring 15 and 16 points respectively with Zuby Ejiofor of St. John’s scoring 23 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

In another thrilling contest, the fifth-seeded Michigan Wolverines secured their spot in the Sweet 16 after defeating Texas A&M 91-79. Roddy Gayle scored a commanding 26 points, including 21 in the second half, allowing Michigan to overcome a ten-point deficit. “It was a team effort, and every player contributed,” Gayle said post-game. The Wolverines are set to meet the winner of Auburn vs. Creighton in the next round.

Meanwhile, the number-three seed Texas Tech Red Raiders triumphed against 11-seed Drake, closing out the game 77-64. Darrion Williams highlighted the victory with a season-high 28 points, and JT Toppin contributed a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds. The Red Raiders will encounter Arkansas in the upcoming regional semifinal.

In the top half of the bracket, the Auburn Tigers showed their might with an 82-70 win over Creighton, demonstrating strong defensive play in the second half. Despite the close contest, Auburn’s Tahaad Pettiford scored 23 points, helping his team control the game in crucial moments.

Lastly, BYU managed to edge by Wisconsin in a nail-biting finish that ended with a 91-89 score. Key performances from Richie Saunders and John Tonje kept the Cougars in the game, with Tonje scoring 37 points, eight of which came during a final comeback attempt.

As the tournament continues, teams are poised to battle through the Sweet 16. “Every game is critical, and the stakes just keep getting higher,” Coach Calipari remarked. Fans can expect more excitement as the remaining teams vie for the ultimate prize in college basketball.
