NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The North Carolina Tar Heels and Texas Longhorns saw their NCAA Tournament aspirations all but extinguished following crushing defeats over the weekend. The Tar Heels fell to their rival for the third time this season, marking their twelfth Quad 1 loss in the last thirteen games. This defeat means the Tar Heels will miss the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons.

No team with only one Quad 1 win and more than six losses has made the tournament since the quadrant system was introduced in 2017, according to CBS Sports. The last team to earn a bid with a 1-6 Quad 1 record was NC State in 2023. Over their last thirteen games, the Tar Heels also suffered a Quad 3 loss at home, further complicating their chances of being selected for the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Longhorns are sitting at 19-15 overall. Historically, teams with a sub-.500 record against top-tier competition struggle to earn at-large bids. Texas holds a record of 12-15 in the top three quadrants, with no team ever receiving an invitation with that many losses against such opponents.

“The selection committee doesn’t look solely at Quad 1-3 records, but the overarching quality is a critical factor in their evaluations,” noted a CBS Sports analyst.

With brackets set to be revealed soon, there’s speculation around which teams will occupy the final at-large bids. Teams like Colorado State are anticipated to drop from contention, potentially paving the way for “bid-stealer” teams from conference tournaments who perform well against expectations.

The SEC, in contrast, continues to bolster its dominance in college basketball. Following dramatic losses by top teams such as Auburn and Michigan State, the SEC is projected to secure multiple No. 1 seeds for the first time. Florida and Tennessee both have excellent chances to solidify their positioning as top seeds.

“The SEC Tournament champion now has the potential to be the fourth No. 1 seed, especially after the recent results,” said CBS Sports analyst Jerry Palm.

Florida’s head coach, Todd Golden, stated post-match, “I think we secured a 1-seed today,” following their emphatic 104-82 win over Alabama.

As the bracket builds, the committee must navigate the complexities of pairing and seeding multiple SEC teams against one another — an unusual but anticipated scenario given the current strength of the conference.

In light of these developments, the future becomes uncertain for teams like North Carolina and Texas, who will now turn their focus to next season while others ready themselves for March Madness.
