Nebraska Baseball Team 2025 Season Opening

PHOENIX, Arizona — The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team starts its 2025 season this weekend at the MLB Desert Invitational, running from February 14-16 at multiple locations in the Phoenix area. The Huskers, who are coming off a tough NCAA Regional exit, look to build momentum against strong opponents, including UC Irvine and Vanderbilt.

The tournament opens with Nebraska facing UC Irvine on Friday at 2 p.m. CT, at Salt River Fields. Mason McConnaughey, who earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors last season, is expected to be the starting pitcher for the Huskers. Nebraska and UC Irvine are currently tied 4-4 in their all-time series.

On February 15, the Huskers will challenge 2023 No. 7 Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. CT, with Ty Horn slated as the starting pitcher. The two teams have only met once previously, with Nebraska winning that matchup 5-3 at the Cambria College Classic in 2023.

The following day, Nebraska will have a rematch against San Diego State, facing off at 6 p.m. CT. The Aztecs have a slight edge in their all-time series against the Huskers, leading 8-4.

The Huskers will wrap up the tournament on February 17 against Grand Canyon at 2 p.m. CT at Brazell Field. Nebraska leads the series 3-1 after competing in a four-game series last year in Phoenix.

Coach Will Bolt has expressed optimism for the season ahead, attributing the team’s preparation to the retention of key players and smart recruitment efforts during the offseason. Alongside returning starters, the arrival of South Dakota State transfer Cael Frost and Creighton transfer Hogan Helligso has bolstered the roster.

The Huskers are ranked No. 24 in the D1Baseball and NCBWA preseason rankings, showcasing their readiness for a competitive season. With a tough opening schedule set to test them, Nebraska aims to establish itself early as a contender in the Big Ten.

This weekend’s action will be streamed live on MLB.com, with select games broadcast on the MLB Network. Fans can also listen to the game broadcasts via the Huskers Radio Network and the official Nebraska Huskers App.
