Nebraska Men’s Basketball Faces New Mexico in Hall of Fame Classic
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Nebraska men’s basketball team heads to Kansas City this week for the Hall of Fame Classic. The Cornhuskers will first face the University of New Mexico Lobos on Thursday night at 6 PM CT at the T-Mobile Center.
After an impressive comeback win over Oklahoma, where they scored 105 points, Nebraska is looking to extend its winning streak to nine games. The Huskers currently hold a record of 4-0 this season, having rallied from a 16-point deficit against Oklahoma last Saturday.
The Lobos are entering the tournament with a 3-1 record following their loss to New Mexico State. They are led by Deyton Albury, who is averaging 13 points per game and shown strong performance at the foul line.
“We have to be very safe with the ball,” Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg said, emphasizing the challenges posed by New Mexico’s disciplined team. “They do a great job forcing turnovers and getting in passing lanes.”
New Mexico’s first-year head coach Eric Olen has revamped the team with nine transfers and several freshmen, creating a new identity for the Lobos. This will be the second meeting between the two schools; the first resulted in a New Mexico victory in 2009.
According to Lobos’ stats, they struggled with rebounding over their last games, having only averaged slight edges against their opponents. The Lobos also feature a talented freshman in Tomislav Buljan, who has been instrumental in contributing double-doubles.
“This is a really good basketball team that we’re playing on Thursday,” Hoiberg said. “We’re shifting our focus solely to New Mexico.”
Following the Hall of Fame Classic, Nebraska will return home for a matchup against Alabama State on November 26.
