Netflix’s ‘Running Point’ Features Star-Studded Cast in Basketball Comedy

LOS ANGELES, CA (Feb. 27, 2025) – Netflix‘s new comedy series ‘Running Point‘ follows the story of the Gordon family, owners of the fictional Los Angeles Waves basketball franchise. The show, which is executive-produced by Mindy Kaling and renowned Lakers owner Jeanie Buss, was inspired by Buss’ own journey in the world of professional basketball.
‘Running Point’ tells the story of Isla Gordon, played by Kate Hudson, who unexpectedly becomes the team president after her brother Cam, portrayed by Justin Theroux, faces a scandal that forces him into rehab. This 10-episode series explores Isla’s challenges as she strives to prove herself in a male-dominated environment.
“I’ve always been eager to dive into something comedic,” Hudson said about her role. “This character offers a fresh challenge and a chance to bring a unique female perspective to a male-driven world.”
The show features a strong supporting cast with notable talent, including Brenda Song as Ali Lee, Isla’s best friend and chief of staff, and Drew Tarver as Sandy Gordon, Isla’s younger brother and the team’s chief financial officer. The characters grapple with family dynamics and the pressures of managing a high-profile sports franchise.
Scott MacArthur plays Ness Gordon, another brother who serves as the team’s general manager, while Jay Ellis stars as Jay Brown, the Waves’ head coach. Chet Hanks and Max Greenfield also join the cast as Travis Bugg and Lev Levenson, respectively.
Ellis, who described his character as a level-headed coach balancing fatherhood with leadership, expressed excitement about the show’s blend of humor and heart. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore resilience and personal growth through a comedic lens,” he said.
The Waves franchise, while fictional, draws clear parallels to the real-life Los Angeles Lakers, adding depth to the series through relatable themes of ambition, family loyalty, and the fight for recognition.
‘Running Point’ quickly ascended to the top of Netflix’s charts within 24 hours of its release. Kaling’s previous successes in television hint at the potential for ‘Running Point’ to become another beloved series, blending humor with poignant storytelling.
“This show showcases the journey of a woman who refuses to be sidelined in her family’s business,” Kaling stated, highlighting the importance of representation in sports and media.
The series is currently streaming on Netflix, captivating audiences of all ages with its engaging narrative and dynamic characters.
