Nevada and New Mexico Baseball Teams Set for Rivalry Weekend Showdowns

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Nevada‘s men’s basketball team faces UNLV on Friday night in Las Vegas, while New Mexico baseball prepares to host a four-game series against Rhode Island starting tomorrow at 2 p.m. Mountain Time. Both teams are eager to improve their standings in their respective leagues.
The Nevada Wolf Pack (16-12, 8-9 MW) aim to sweep the Runnin’ Rebels for the second consecutive season. The Mountain West matchup takes place at the Thomas & Mack Center, with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m. UNLV enters the contest with a record of 15-13 and a 9-8 performance in the conference this season. After capturing a recent victory against UNLV, the Pack is motivated for their in-state rivalry match.
Meanwhile, the New Mexico Lobos baseball team, boasting a record of 5-4, is coming off a commanding 7-0 win over New Mexico State earlier this week. They split a four-game series with Northern Colorado in their previous outing, averaging 18.3 hits per game and a whopping .426 team batting average over the weekend. Jordy Oriach has emerged as a key player, hitting a home run in each of his last three games.
“Our offense has been clicking, and we’re excited to carry this momentum into this series against Rhode Island,” said Lobos head coach Tod Brown. New Mexico holds a 3-0 all-time record against the Rams, previously sweeping them in a three-game series back in 2007.
In their latest ranking statistics, UNM ranks 16th nationally in batting average at .333 and 17th in slugging percentage at .553. As the Lobos continue their homestand, they look to capitalize on their strong offensive stats during the four-game set with the Rams.
Friday’s game against Rhode Island represents an important opportunity for the Lobos to further establish their dominance in the early part of the season. Game one begins at Santa Ana Star Field, followed by a Saturday afternoon match and Sunday’s doubleheader.
Both the Nevada and New Mexico teams are geared up for the weekend, with the outcome potentially impacting their future standings in the Mountain West Conference.
