New England Patriots’ Running Back Situation Ahead of Week 7
New England Patriots running back Antonio Gibson is emerging as a potential starter against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7, following uncertainties surrounding Rhamondre Stevenson. Stevenson is currently nursing a foot injury, and his availability will be determined closer to the game, making him a game-time decision.
Despite the possibility of starting, Gibson’s role in fantasy football lineups needs to be carefully considered. Analysts have noted that the 26-year-old running back has shown improved performance when paired with Stevenson this season. From Weeks 2 through 4, acting as the backup, Gibson averaged 10 touches and 73 scrimmage yards per game. These numbers have slightly declined in recent weeks when he has taken on the starting role, where his average dropped to 12 touches and 50 scrimmage yards per game.
However, should Stevenson be sidelined, the opportunity for Gibson becomes more pronounced, especially given that the Patriots face the Jaguars. The Jacksonville defense has allowed the second-most receptions, second-most receiving yards, third-most receiving touchdowns, and seventh-most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season. As such, if Gibson assumes the starting position, he is projected to be a mid-to-low RB3/FLEX option in fantasy leagues.
