Will & Harper Netflix Documentary

In the latest road trip documentary “Will & Harper,” directed by Josh Greenbaum, the spotlight shines on comedian Will Ferrell and his longtime friend Harper Steele. The documentary, set for release on Netflix, offers an intimate exploration of friendship amidst personal changes, as Steele delves into her journey of coming out as transgender.

During an interview with NBC News, Ferrell recounted filming experiences, stating, “On that third day, you really settle into just hanging out the way you would if there weren’t cameras there, and I think that corresponds with what you see.” The project depicts not only scenic adventures but also deep conversations as it tours through various states, from New York across the Midwest, and finally to California.

Ferrell and Steele, who met on the set of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” in 1995, travel in a 16-day cross-country tour, captured with humor and heart. Early in the film, Ferrell jokingly questions Steele about driving stereotypes, a moment that sets the tone for a candid exploration of gender and friendship.

Steele’s journey to embrace her transition plays a central role in the documentary. Open discussions unfold on mental health, living authentically, and navigating societal perceptions. “I was never too afraid to talk about myself,” Steele commented, expressing the unique vulnerability that transitioning entails.

The film owes its genesis to Steele’s letter in 2021, informing close friends and family of her transition. Ferrell responded with support and the idea of documenting their reacquaintance, which initially met with Steele’s hesitance but eventually materialized after much consideration.

With Greenbaum’s documentary expertise, known for films like “Too Funny to Fail,” the narrative captures the duo visiting locales such as a Pacers game in Indianapolis and a 72-ounce steakhouse in Texas. The journey blends humor with meaningful discussions on topics including top surgery, gender dysphoria, and public perceptions.

Director Greenbaum acknowledged both the narrative and emotional safety of his subjects, noting the importance of “following their lead” due to their openness. “I want to protect my friends and make sure they’re literally, physically safe,” he remarked, highlighting the dual concerns of storytelling and security.

“Will & Harper” showcases not only the duo’s camaraderie but also signals societal shifts in acceptance, as evidenced by interactions with younger generations. Ferrell noted, “When we explained, ‘I’m with my friend Harper, and she just transitioned,’ it wasn’t even a question to them.” Steele added, “It was very hopeful,” reflecting optimism about generational attitudes towards transgender lives.

Through its blend of humor and poignant moments, “Will & Harper” offers audiences a narrative that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, shedding light on the evolving dynamics of personal identity and public discourse.
