NEW ORLEANS, La. — The New Orleans Saints have announced the hiring of Kellen Moore as their new head coach, completing the 2025 NFL coaching carousel. Moore, who served as the Philadelphia Eagles‘ offensive coordinator, helped lead the team to a commanding 40-22 victory in Super Bowl LIX.
At just 36 years old, Moore has quickly established himself as a promising coaching talent. In his first season with the Eagles in 2024, he guided the offense to a robust performance, ranking seventh in scoring with an average of 27.2 points per game and eighth in total offense at 367.2 yards per game.
Under Moore’s guidance, Eagles running back also made headlines as he rushed for 2,005 yards, becoming only the ninth player in NFL history to reach the 2,000-yard mark in a single season. This feat capped an impressive year for Moore, earning him recognition for innovative offensive strategies.
Moore inherits a Saints team that struggled with injuries last season, finishing 5-12. The team faced significant challenges, including the prolonged absence of quarterback , who missed seven games due to a fractured left hand. This injury sidelined Carr for the last four games of the season, contributing to the franchise’s unprecedented seven-game losing streak after an initial two wins by large margins.
“I’m excited to take on this new challenge and lead the Saints,” Moore said in a recent press conference. “We have a talented roster, and I believe we can build on the foundations of success.”
The challenges ahead for Moore will be significant. The Saints are currently $59.5 million over the salary cap, making offseason maneuvering difficult. General Manager Mickey Loomis has been known for his aggressive roster management, often restructuring contracts but leaving the team in a precarious financial spot.
“It’s going to be a process,” Moore acknowledged. “But I see a path forward, and I’m eager to get started.”
Moore’s rise in coaching is impressive, considering he was a backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys after going undrafted in 2012. His coaching career took flight when he became the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach in 2018, later being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019. His offenses consistently ranked among the top 10 in the NFL during his tenure in Dallas.
The Saints look forward to utilizing Moore’s offensive acumen, particularly with Carr, who will be 34 years old at the start of the 2025 season. In contrast to last season’s struggles, the Saints hope to leverage their ninth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to bolster their roster.
In the face of uncertainty surrounding player contracts and cap space, Moore’s first challenge will be to instill a competitive mindset while navigating the complexities of a struggling franchise. “We need to focus on building a culture of resilience and success,” Moore stated during the team announcement.
