New South Wales rugby league coach, Michael Maguire, has announced a bold team selection ahead of the State of Origin series opener, with significant changes to the squad. Incumbent captain James Tedesco has been dropped in favor of Dylan Edwards, who will make his debut in the prestigious competition.

The Blues squad includes six debutants, showcasing Maguire’s desire for a new era in NSW rugby league. Among the new faces are Nicho Hynes, Jarome Luai, Brian To'o, Stephen Crichton, Joseph Suaalii, and Zac Lomax, all poised to make their mark in the marquee event.

In a surprising move, Manly forward Jake Trbojevic has been named as the new Blues captain, taking over the leadership role from Tedesco. Trbojevic’s experience and reliability make him a fitting choice for the position.

Other notable inclusions in the NSW squad are Spencer Leniu, Mitch Barnett, Reece Robson, Liam Martin, Angus Crichton, Haumole Olakau’atu, Hudson Young, and more. Maguire’s decisions reflect a strategic blend of experience and youth in the team.

With several key players sidelined due to injury, including Nathan Cleary and Cameron Murray, the Blues will face a formidable Queensland side led by Daly Cherry-Evans. The stage is set for a thrilling series opener at the Accor Stadium in Sydney.
