In a surprising move, the New York Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh after a challenging start to the 2023-24 NFL season. The decision, announced by Jets Chairman Woody Johnson on October 8, 2023, came following a loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London.

Saleh, notably the NFL’s first Muslim head coach, was captured on camera wearing a Lebanese flag pin during his final game, sparking questions about whether his expression of heritage played a role in his dismissal. When approached at a Whole Foods in New Jersey shortly after the firing, Saleh declined to comment on this matter.

The Jets, under Saleh, recorded a 2-3 start in his fourth season with the team. During his tenure, he struggled to improve the team’s performance, finishing with a 20-36 record start. Despite this, Johnson stated that the decision was based on the team’s overall performance rather than recent games.

Following Saleh’s departure, the Council on American–Islamic Relations (CAIR) released a statement urging the Jets to address questions surrounding Saleh’s exit, particularly given the timing relative to his wearing of the flag pin.

Internally, Saleh’s firing resonated through the Jets’ training facility, with players learning the news through social media. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was among the first to report the development.

The firing marks a significant change for the Jets, who appointed defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich as the interim head coach. The team’s leadership, including Johnson, expressed that the Jets have a robust roster capable of achieving more than they have thus far this season.

Robert Saleh himself released a statement expressing gratitude toward the Jets organization and fan base, saying, “I will always be appreciative of the love and support.”

Despite the tumultuous circumstances, Saleh maintains that his relationship with key players, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers, remains positive. Rodgers, in turn, has publicly denied any influence over ownership’s decision to dismiss Saleh.

The Jets are now tasked with regrouping under Ulbrich’s guidance as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium.
