New York Jets Retain Mike Tannenbaum and Rick Spielman to Aid in GM and HC Searches
The New York Jets have taken an unconventional approach in their search for a new general manager and head coach by retaining the services of The 33rd Team, a company founded by former Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum in 2019. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Tannenbaum, along with former Minnesota Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman, will lead the project to assist the Jets in their leadership search.
Tannenbaum, who previously worked for the New York Jets during their successful period that included two consecutive AFC Championship game appearances, brings significant experience to the table. He last worked in the NFL as the Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Miami Dolphins from 2015 to 2018.
Rick Spielman, who had a lengthy tenure as the General Manager of the Minnesota Vikings from 2012 to 2021, also joins the effort. Spielman recently assisted the Washington Commanders in their general manager and head coaching searches last season.
The 33rd Team will provide data analysis and help identify, vet, and coordinate candidates and interviews. This marks the first time the group has been involved in such a capacity for an NFL team, making it a unique departure from the Jets’ traditional hiring process.
The decision to bring in external expertise, particularly from individuals with extensive NFL experience, is seen as an interesting choice that could yield different results for the Jets in their search for new leadership.
