New York Mets Vs Los Angeles Dodgers Nlcs

Pete Alonso, a key player for the New York Mets, expressed optimism as the team prepared for what could be his final game in Mets colors at Citi Field. This comes as the Mets face potential elimination from the National League Championship Series (NLCS) by the Los Angeles Dodgers, with Game 5 scheduled for Friday.

Speaking with reporters following Thursday’s game, Alonso dismissed concerns about the end of the Mets’ season. He stated, “I’m so focused on trying to win for these guys. This group is really special and it’s been an absolute blast this year. We’ve accomplished a lot.”

He emphasized the importance of the upcoming match, saying, “It’s been really fun but we intend to keep putting our best foot forward and keep rising to the challenge.” The Mets have faced significant hurdles in the series, trailing 3-1 after losing two consecutive games at home. The team has been outscored in the series 30-9 and has struggled with runners in scoring positions.

The statistics reveal a challenging scenario for the Mets, who have left 33 runners on base and have a .148 batting average with runners in scoring positions. The pitching staff has had difficulties as well, setting a four-game playoff record by walking 31 batters and allowing 10 runs in the latest game, the most this postseason.

Despite these setbacks, Alonso remains optimistic about the team’s chances, recalling their resilience throughout the season. “I believe in this group,” he stated. “This group has responded so well to adversity all year and the character of this team, the one word I can think of for the 2024 Mets, other than Grimace, is resiliency. That’s just who we are.”

Off the field, the Mets are contemplating their roster decisions for the upcoming offseason. One of the significant considerations is the potential signing of Milwaukee Brewers‘ shortstop Willy Adames, should Alonso choose to leave. Mets’ baseball president David Stearns, who was previously with the Brewers, could see Adames as a key addition, possibly even shifting him to third base, with Mark Vientos taking over first base.

Reports suggest that Adames might command a contract of six years for around $152 million. This move would be contingent on the future of Alonso, who previously turned down a seven-year, $158 million extension from the Mets and is expected to seek a six-year deal worth $174 million in free agency.

The Mets are therefore facing critical decisions both on the field in their imminent game against the Dodgers and beyond, as they look to shape their team for future success.
