New York Rangers Hire Mike Sullivan as Head Coach after Penguins Exit

New York, NY — The New York Rangers announced Friday that they have hired Mike Sullivan as their new head coach, just days after he was dismissed from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sullivan’s five-year deal reportedly makes him the highest-paid coach in NHL history, according to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan.
General manager Chris Drury emphasized Sullivan’s immense credentials. “Mike Sullivan has established himself as one of the premier head coaches in the NHL,” Drury stated. “He brings a championship-level presence behind the bench.” Sullivan’s hiring comes after the Rangers parted ways with Peter Laviolette, who was let go following a disappointing season.
The Rangers, who failed to reach the playoffs this past season, are looking to Sullivan to restore the team’s competitive edge. Sullivan previously led the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017.
“Given his numerous accomplishments throughout his coaching career — including two Stanley Cups and leading Team USA at the international level — Mike brings a championship-level presence behind the bench,” said Drury. Sullivan spent four years as an assistant coach with the Rangers under John Tortorella from 2009 to 2013, where he built a strong rapport with players, including Drury.
Owner James Dolan welcomed Sullivan back to the organization, highlighting his proven track record. “Mike’s success in the NHL and internationally speaks for itself,” Dolan said. “I look forward to seeing him behind the Rangers bench.”
After being fired from the Penguins, where he had been head coach since 2015, Sullivan left with a stellar record of 409-255-89. Despite his successes, the Penguins missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
Sullivan is also scheduled to coach the U.S. men’s hockey team at the 2026 Milan Olympics, adding to his busy schedule as he embarks on this new chapter with the Rangers.
As the season approaches, Sullivan faces the challenge of turning the Rangers into a playoff contender once again.
