New York Yankees Gear Up for Aggressive Pursuit of Roki Sasaki and Other Key Targets
The New York Yankees are set to make a significant push in the free agent market, particularly targeting Japanese pitching sensation Roki Sasaki. According to Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, the team will have an in-person meeting with Sasaki soon, following his return to the United States after the holidays.
Sasaki, a 23-year-old right-handed pitcher, is highly regarded for his upper-90s fastball, wipeout slider, and splitter. Despite being one of the most talented pitchers available, Sasaki’s contract will be limited by international bonus pool rules, allowing him to earn a maximum of $8 million if signed after January 15.
The Yankees have been active in the offseason, having already signed Max Fried to a $218 million deal and acquiring Devin Williams and Cody Bellinger through trades. These moves come after the team lost superstar outfielder Juan Soto to the New York Mets in free agency.
While the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres are considered heavy favorites to sign Sasaki, the Yankees’ strong brand in Japan and their history of successfully recruiting Japanese talent could give them an edge. Sasaki is reportedly looking to be a key figure in his next organization, a role he could potentially fill as a No. 3 starter behind Gerrit Cole and Max Fried.
In addition to pursuing Sasaki, the Yankees are also exploring other options to fill their remaining needs. They are considering free agents like Teoscar Hernández and Anthony Santander, as well as potential trades for players such as Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals and other infield solutions.
