The New Zealand Warriors have taken a decisive step by standing down their prominent prop, Addin Fonua-Blake, following a breach of club standards. The team’s head coach, Andrew Webster, announced that Fonua-Blake voluntarily removed himself from the dressing room after the Warriors’ 22-20 victory over Penrith during the Magic Round in Brisbane. Notably, he was absent during the post-match team address and the customary team song.

This development, which will sideline the 2023 Dally M Prop of The Year, comes as the Warriors prepare to face the Dolphins on Sunday. The decision to sit Fonua-Blake is significant, especially after a turbulent period last year when the 28-year-old sought a release from the Warriors for compassionate reasons to return to Sydney.

Following negotiations, the Warriors agreed in December to release Fonua-Blake from his contract early, facilitating a move to the Sharks in 2025 on a reported $4 million deal. While speculation arose suggesting his absence from the team song was a ploy to expedite a transfer to the Sharks, his manager, Ahmad Merhi, dismissed these claims, emphasizing Fonua-Blake’s personal reflection and disappointment in his performance.

Fonua-Blake refuted rumors about seeking a mid-season exit from the Warriors, reaffirming his commitment to the club. He expressed intense emotions post-game, leading to his unprofessional departure from the dressing room. The prop acknowledged his misstep and vowed to ensure such incidents do not recur.

With Fonua-Blake sitting out this week’s match and a bye for the Warriors the following week, he aims to return rejuvenated and focused to face the Cowboys. Despite the recent controversy, the Warriors remain dedicated to upholding their standards and fostering a culture of accountability within the team.
