Newcastle United Joins Race to Sign Lille Star Jonathan David
LILLE, France — Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Lille striker Jonathan David, one of Europe’s most sought-after players, as the Canadian international prepares to leave the French club on a free transfer this summer. The Magpies, along with Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Manchester United, are vying for the 25-year-old forward, who has attracted significant attention for his prolific goal-scoring record.
Newcastle’s interest was confirmed after a high-level club representative attended Lille’s recent Ligue 1 match against Nice, where David provided an assist in a narrow 2-1 victory. The striker, who has scored 101 goals in 213 Ligue 1 appearances, is currently joint top scorer in the league this season with 11 goals. His agent, Nikos Mavromaras, has indicated that David is open to exploring options across Europe, with Champions League qualification being a key factor in his decision.
Lille president Olivier Letang has ruled out a January transfer, stating that David will remain with the club until the summer. “We are not going to sell him in January, and we have not received any offer for him,” Letang said in November. “Jonathan loves Lille, and our position has been clear from the beginning. He already has a contract offer in his hands, and the ball is in his court.”
David’s wage demands of approximately £120,000 per week are not expected to be a hurdle for Newcastle, especially if the transfer is free. However, competition from other top clubs could spark a bidding war. Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with the player in recent days.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is reportedly keen to bolster his attacking options, with David seen as an ideal complement to current top scorer Alexander Isak. The Canadian striker has already netted 19 goals in all competitions this season, including four in the Champions League. Despite a recent dry spell—failing to score in his last five Ligue 1 matches—David’s overall form has been exceptional.
Canada national team coach Jesse Marsch, who previously managed Leeds United, has praised David’s intelligence on the pitch. “I’ve advertised him often as the most intelligent footballer I’ve ever coached,” Marsch said recently. David’s versatility and goal-scoring prowess make him a valuable asset for any club aiming to compete at the highest level.
Newcastle’s pursuit of David aligns with their broader strategy to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2024-25 season. The club has also been scouting other targets, including Brentford‘s Bryan Mbeumo, as they prepare for a busy summer transfer window. With Champions League qualification still within reach, Newcastle are positioning themselves as an attractive destination for top-tier talent like David.
