NFL Coaching Carousel: Jaguars, Buccaneers, and Jets Make High-Stakes Moves

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The NFL offseason coaching carousel has taken dramatic turns, with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New York Jets making high-profile hires that could reshape their futures. The Jaguars secured former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen as their new head coach, while the Jets brought back former player and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to lead their defense.
Coen, who helped Tampa Bay’s offense rank among the league’s best in 2024, confirmed he will continue calling plays in Jacksonville. “Yes, we’ll absolutely be calling football plays,” Coen said during his introductory press conference. His primary task will be maximizing the potential of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Lawrence, who has battled injuries in recent seasons, is seen as the cornerstone of the Jaguars’ rebuild. “How do we make Trevor Lawrence and this offense as dynamic and explosive as we can be?” Coen said. “We’ve got to build it around him as well.”
Meanwhile, the Buccaneers are left to regroup after Coen’s departure. Under his guidance, quarterback Baker Mayfield posted career-high numbers, including 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns. Coen’s exit has reportedly left Tampa Bay frustrated, but the team is expected to move forward with a new offensive strategy.
In New York, Aaron Glenn’s hiring marks a return to his roots. Glenn, a former Jets defensive back, spent four years as the Lions’ defensive coordinator, where he built a reputation for resilience and accountability. “Glenn will likely hold his players, coaches, and even team owner Woody Johnson accountable,” said one analyst. His familiarity with the Jets’ culture and history could provide a much-needed boost to a franchise that has struggled since its last playoff appearance.
The Tennessee Titans also made headlines, with president of football operations Chad Brinker signaling their openness to trading the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Brinker’s comments suggest the Titans are exploring all options to accelerate their rebuild, including targeting Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter or versatile prospect Travis Hunter.
As the NFL offseason unfolds, the success of these coaching hires remains uncertain. Coen, Glenn, and other new faces will face immense pressure to deliver results in a league where patience is often in short supply.
