NFL Free Agency: Key Moves and Players to Watch in 2025

NEW YORK, NY — The NFL’s free agency period is in full swing as of April 15, 2025, following the start of the new league year on March 12. With many top players already signed, teams are beginning to solidify their rosters leading into the upcoming NFL Draft.
Key free agents include notable names across positions, such as quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers, with teams actively navigating their needs for the next season. The potential shift of high-profile players like J.J. McCarthy has raised discussions about quarterback rankings across the league.
As teams wrap up negotiations, standout players like Nick Chubb are weighing their options, while the Green Bay Packers are actively assessing their draft needs. Notably, the Miami Dolphins are exploring trade opportunities, including a possible move for cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
Reportedly, the Dolphins and Ramsey have mutually agreed to explore a trade less than a year after extending his contract. With $25.1 million guaranteed this season, a post-June 1 trade could yield over $9 million in cap space for Miami, according to OverTheCap.com.
“We want to ensure both sides are comfortable moving forward,” said a source familiar with the discussions. “Jalen has been a cornerstone for us, but every option is on the table.”
In addition to Ramsey’s situation, the Packers have signed several players while looking to retain core components like Antonio Williams. Teams are also releasing players to create more cap flexibility. The New England Patriots have made headlines by securing Stefon Diggs with a three-year deal, bringing in experience to their receiving corps.
“Stefon is a player we were eager to add,” said Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. “His experience and ability to create plays will be invaluable.”
Teams such as the New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams have primarily focused on retaining key players and addressing gaps on their rosters. The Jets signed former quarterback Geno Smith to a one-year deal, while the Rams have acquired receivers Cooper Kupp and Marquez Valdes-Scantling alongside missing significant talents like Geno Smith and DK Metcalf.
The NFC landscape continues to shift as teams seek to improve their standings ahead of the draft. The Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals made strategic moves, aiming to bolster their defenses as they head into the next season.
“Every decision we make is about how to strengthen our team,” Cowboys general manager Jerry Jones stated. “We are focused on creating a competitive roster.”
The Cincinnati Bengals may be targeting extensions with players like edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, whose contract negotiations could significantly impact the team’s long-term cap space.
“It’s crucial for us to keep our core intact,” said Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. “Trey has been a critical component of our defensive strategy.”
As the free agency window remains open, teams are racing against the clock to finalize acquisitions before the NFL Draft begins on April 27.
