FRISCO, Texas — Marshawn Kneeland, a defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound early Thursday morning. He was 24 years old.

Kneeland’s death, which followed a police chase, shocked the football community. He was pursued by police late Wednesday night after failing to stop for a traffic violation. Following the pursuit, his vehicle crashed, and he abandoned the car before his body was found nearby.

The NFL paid tribute to Kneeland during Sunday’s Week 10 games, beginning with a moment of silence in Berlin before the matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and Atlanta Falcons. The league issued a memo to all teams, urging them to observe a moment of silence in honor of Kneeland. The announcement included a message encouraging anyone in need of help to contact the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

Kneeland was in his second season with the Cowboys, having been selected in the second round of the 2024 draft. He played in seven games this season and had recently scored his first career touchdown. He leaves behind a community of teammates and friends who admired him dearly.

Teammate Dak Prescott spoke at a memorial event, expressing deep sorrow and emphasizing the importance of mental health. Prescott reflected, “It’s just a pain that you don’t wish upon anybody. You wish none of us had to go through this.”

In addition to the Cowboys, the NHL’s Dallas Stars also held a moment of silence for Kneeland. The Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos also recognized him during their games, demonstrating widespread respect across the sports world.

The Cowboys, currently on a bye week, will next face the Las Vegas Raiders on November 17. The loss of Kneeland will undoubtedly weigh heavily as they return to play.
