Nfl Thanksgiving Games History Highlights

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Ahead of Thanksgiving, the NFL is gearing up for its annual celebration of football, complete with power rankings and memorable moments from past games. This year, 31 of the league’s 32 teams have played on Thanksgiving, with the exception being the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have yet to make an appearance.

As fans prepare for matchups like the iconic Packers vs. Lions, Chiefs vs. Cowboys, and Bengals vs. Ravens, NFL Nation reporters reminisced about notable Turkey Day performances. The historical significance of Thanksgiving games dates back decades, making it one of the most cherished days on the football calendar.

For the Los Angeles Rams, their Thanksgiving memory is stark: a 20-0 shutout of the Lions in 1975, a game where wide receiver Harold Jackson shone with two touchdown catches. “That victory remains a highlight for Rams fans,” noted Sarah Barshop.

The New England Patriots also have their moments. A notable performance from 2002 saw linebacker Tedy Bruschi securing the team’s first Thanksgiving win with a touchdown from an interception against the Lions. Coach Mike Vrabel celebrated alongside him, highlighting the camaraderie among teammates.

Similarly, the Denver Broncos found their Thanksgiving triumph through a memorable 2005 game. Running back Ron Dayne, who only had a brief stint with the team, earned the turkey leg after leading a pivotal 55-yard run that set up victory over the Cowboys.

The Eagles and Cowboys rivalry is electrifying, marked by the infamous “Bounty Bowl” in 1989, characterized by intense tactics and fierce competition. “That game ignited a new level of rivalry that still resonates today,” explained Tim McManus.

This year’s lineup includes the Cincinnati Bengals facing Baltimore Ravens at 8:20 p.m. ET. The matchup carries playoff implications as both teams seek to bolster their standings.

Fans can expect exciting plays and, perhaps, new memories to add to the storied history of NFL Thanksgiving games. As teams suit up, the spirit of the holiday mix of family and football continues.
