Nick Haynes, a seasoned defender previously with Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants, has signed with Carlton Football Club as an unrestricted free agent. Haynes’ move to the Blues was finalized with necessary paperwork submitted on Friday, signaling his transition after a commendable tenure of 211 matches with the Giants.

At the age of 32, Haynes agreed to a one-year contract with Carlton. His departure from the Giants follows an acknowledgment of stiff competition for a starting position within their ranks. Carlton sees Haynes as a strategic addition to bolster their defensive lineup, complementing key player Jacob Weitering. The acquisition will not entail any compensation for GWS.

Carlton’s List Manager, Nick Austin, expressed enthusiasm over Haynes’ inclusion. “Nick brings quality and invaluable experience to our defensive squad, effectively augmenting our back line,” Austin remarked. “His resilience throughout his career showcases his strong work ethic, and his proven durability is a crucial asset we aim to incorporate this season.”

Haynes’ ability to play both as a defender and on the wing is notable. His most outstanding season was in 2020 when he was named All-Australian and secured the Kevin Sheedy Medal after leading the league in intercept marks. His move comes at a time of significant transitions for the Giants, who recently exited the finals in straight sets.

Alongside Haynes, other GWS free agents have also made moves, with James Peatling seeking a trade to Adelaide. Meanwhile, the Blues had a challenging run, culminating in an elimination final loss to Brisbane.
