Nick Pivetta Pitching For Boston Red Sox

BOSTON, Mass. — With Spring Training just around the corner, former Boston Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta remains one of the most intriguing free agents on the market. The 31-year-old right-hander, who posted a 4.14 ERA across 27 appearances in 2024, declined a qualifying offer from the Red Sox, leaving his future uncertain.

Pivetta, a fan favorite during his time in Boston, has drawn significant interest this offseason. However, his decision to decline the qualifying offer means any team signing him would forfeit draft compensation, potentially slowing his market. Additionally, the availability of Japanese phenom Rōki Sasaki has further complicated the pitching landscape, as teams may wait to see where Sasaki lands before pursuing other options.

Former MLB veteran Erik Kratz predicts Pivetta could land with the Atlanta Braves. “I feel like Atlanta,” Kratz said. “They don’t need to expect too much of him, but I think a lot of people are going to be surprised by what he gets in free agency.” The Braves, who lost ace Max Fried to free agency, could see Pivetta as a cost-effective replacement.

Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays have emerged as another potential suitor. After missing out on top free agents like Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes, the Blue Jays are in need of rotation help. Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball suggested Pivetta could sign a $40 million deal with Toronto. “Outside of Jack Flaherty, Nick Pivetta now stands out as the top free-agent starter left,” Finkelstein wrote.

Pivetta’s versatility and experience make him an attractive option for teams seeking pitching depth. Whether he lands in Atlanta, Toronto, or elsewhere, his next move will be closely watched as the MLB offseason enters its final stretch.
