Nigeria Vs Libya Afcon Qualifier

Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, is set to continue their campaign in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers with a crucial match against Libya. The encounter is scheduled for Friday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria. The Super Eagles, currently leading Group D with four points, hope to solidify their position with a win against the Libyan side, known as the Mediterranean Knights.

The home team, managed by interim coach Austin Eguavoen, has had a strong start in the qualifiers, securing a 3-0 victory against Benin Republic followed by a goalless draw in Kigali against Rwanda. The upcoming match against Libya is critical for Nigeria, as a victory in this doubleheader could bring them closer to securing a spot in the AFCON finals, which will be held in Morocco.

Eguavoen expressed confidence in his team’s readiness, despite the absence of star player Victor Osimhen, highlighting the determination “to fight for those three points”. He acknowledged the challenge posed by Libya, pointing out their competitiveness despite their current position at the bottom of the group standings with only one point from two matches.

In contrast, the Mediterranean Knights are under pressure to change their fortunes. With a recent change in management, Nasser Al-Hadiri has replaced the Serbian coach Milutin Sredojevic, following Libya’s 1-1 draw against Rwanda and a 2-1 loss to Benin. Al-Hadiri aims to galvanize his team to earn valuable points and rekindle their hopes of ending a 12-year absence from the AFCON finals, last appearing in the tournament in 2012.

Historically, Nigeria has been dominant over Libya, having won all four of their previous encounters, including AFCON qualifiers in 2018. Eguavoen’s side’s confidence is buoyed by such past results, and they are keen to leverage this advantage to further their undefeated start in the current qualification series.

The Super Eagles are known for their strong defense, being the only team in Group D yet to concede a goal. This aspect will be crucial as they face a Libyan team eager to turn their campaign around under new leadership.

The outcome of this match will not only be pivotal for Nigeria’s qualification prospects but also a potential turning point for Libya as they seek to gain momentum in their quest to qualify for the AFCON 2025 finals.
