Nigerian Footballers Shine in UEFA Europa League Fixtures
The UEFA Europa League resumed on Wednesday with several matches featuring Nigerian footballers making notable contributions. One of the early standout matches included Nigerian defender Ibrahim Buhari making his debut for Swedish club Elfsborg, where they faced AZ Alkmaar. Despite his effort, Elfsborg suffered a 3-2 defeat, with Buhari having a challenging game overall.
AZ Alkmaar controlled much of the match, although their defense showed vulnerabilities. Buhari made four clearances and had 32 touches, but ultimately struggled to make a significant impact, being one of the weaker performers for his team.
Another Nigerian star, Victor Osimhen, played a vital role in Galatasaray‘s encounter against PAOK at Rams Park. Osimhen, a key figure for the team, continued his streak of assists. He managed to create several opportunities, including a pivotal moment in the 48th minute when his aerial challenge led to an own goal by a PAOK player, initially giving Galatasaray the lead.
However, their advantage was short-lived as Giannis Konstantelias scored the equalizer for PAOK in the 67th minute. Galatasaray responded by pressuring the opposition, achieving another goal when Osimhen assisted Yunus Akgun in the 78th minute. Osimhen was then substituted for Mauro Icardi, who secured the 3-1 victory with a goal in stoppage time.
Elsewhere, Nigerian midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was instrumental for Lazio in their impressive 3-0 win against Dynamo Kyiv. Despite the ongoing challenges faced by Dynamo Kyiv due to political unrest, both teams played on neutral ground. Dele-Bashiru scored Lazio’s second goal and contributed an assist to Boulaye Dia, demonstrating his significant influence over the game.
Lazio’s dominant performance was evident from the start, with their goal-scoring completed within the first 39 minutes, largely facilitated by Dele-Bashiru’s involvement. He played 79 minutes before being substituted, helping Lazio maintain their lead until the final whistle.
