Nikita Zadorov, a prominent Russian defenseman in the National Hockey League, has opened up about his departure from the Vancouver Canucks, characterizing the contract negotiations as somewhat problematic. During an appearance on a podcast hosted by Pete Blackburn and DJ Bean, Zadorov shared insights into the unsuccessful talks with his former team.

“Yeah,” affirmed Zadorov when questioned about whether he expected to re-sign with the Canucks. “We wanted to stay at the start…but there are points in negotiations when you check boxes and then a couple of things didn’t go the way we wanted to. Kind of felt a little bit disrespectful too. It didn’t work out,” he explained.

Zadorov eventually parted ways with the Canucks, securing a lucrative contract with the Boston Bruins worth $30 million over a six-year period. Notably, fellow Canucks free agent Elias Lindholm also made the move to sign with the Bruins.

Describing how the transition occurred, Zadorov disclosed that he and Lindholm contemplated joining the Bruins during a visit to Boston as part of the Canucks squad last season. This consideration came into fruition with the Bruins signing both players.

During his tenure with the Canucks, Zadorov quickly gained favor with fans and became a standout on the ice. He played some of the best hockey of his career and was notably effective during their recent playoff run, where he recorded four goals and eight points in 13 games. His dynamic presence, both defensively and offensively, significantly contributed to the team’s efforts.

Zadorov, known not only for his commanding gameplay but also for his quick wit and candid nature, left a lasting impression on the team’s supporters. His playoff performance captured the attention of teams across the league, ensuring he was a sought-after player in the free agency market.

As the Canucks attempted to fill the void left by Zadorov’s departure, they added defensemen Derek Forbort and Vincent Desharnais. These signings were intended to compensate for the substantial physicality and presence that Zadorov had brought to the team.
