Nikita Zadorov Reflects on Calgary Flames Departure and New Start with Boston Bruins
Nikita Zadorov, a 29-year-old professional ice hockey player, shared his feelings regarding the negotiations with the Calgary Flames, describing them as “a little bit disrespectful.” Zadorov, who recently signed a $30 million contract with the Boston Bruins, expressed his initial desire to remain with the Flames but felt disregarded during the contract discussions.
Zadorov revealed his sentiments during a conversation about his time with the Flames, stating, “I was talking to the ownership when [Brad] Treliving [announced he was leaving]. I still said, ‘I still believe in this team, I want to stay. I have one more year on my deal, maybe we can start talking after July 1.’” Despite his willingness to negotiate an extension, Zadorov highlighted that he was the only big-name unrestricted free agent (UFA) not offered a contract extension ahead of the 2023-24 season.
At the time, the Calgary Flames had several key players approaching free agency, including Elias Lindholm, Noah Hanifin, Chris Tanev, and Mikael Backlund. While Backlund secured an extension, the others, including Zadorov, were traded, leading to Zadorov’s feelings of neglect by the team’s management.
Reflecting on his career, Zadorov also spoke highly of Darryl Sutter, who coached the Flames and received the Jack Adams Award in 2021-22. He stated, “The two years with Darryl were the best two years of my life. I really enjoyed it. He’s a big reason why I’m at where I’m at right now. He taught me so much, and I enjoyed my time over there.”
The Flames, since Zadorov’s departure, have undergone significant changes and are focusing on rebuilding their roster. Meanwhile, Zadorov is integrating into the Boston Bruins, a team with strong Stanley Cup ambitions, marking a fresh start for the player in his NHL career.
