MIAMI, Fla. — Miami Heat forward Nikola Jovic is now listed as probable to play in Thursday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs after dealing with a hip contusion. Jovic sustained the injury during a game against the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday.

The probable designation indicates that Jovic is expected to be ready for the matchup. He has been providing depth as a backup big man behind Kel'el Ware, and has been crucial for the Heat’s frontcourt. So far this season, Jovic has averaged 11.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and made 2.0 three-pointers per game, shooting 48.3 percent from the field and an impressive 90 percent from the free-throw line.

This season has seen Jovic, who is only 22 years old, agree to a four-year, $62.4 million contract extension with the Heat. His performance thus far suggests that the team sees a bright future in him, even with modest statistics. In Miami’s recent 144-117 victory over the Hornets, Jovic’s role gained additional importance as the team navigates various injuries.

Miami is facing challenges, as All-Star shooting guard Tyler Herro and rookie guard Kasparas Jakucionis are still recovering from their respective injuries. Herro is still weeks away from a potential return from left ankle surgery, while Jakucionis has been sidelined with a groin injury.

Worryingly for the Heat, guard Norman Powell has also been ruled out of Thursday’s encounter due to a groin issue, thus further straining the team’s backcourt depth. Before his injury, Powell had been averaging 24.0 points per game for Miami, showcasing his importance.

The Heat will look to bounce back against the Spurs, who come into the game without a loss this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET. Miami holds a record of 3-1, hoping to improve their standing as they aim for a playoff push.
