ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Nolan Arenado, the St. Louis Cardinals’ veteran third baseman, finds himself at a crossroads as the 2025 MLB season progresses. Just one month into the season, the Cardinals are struggling with a 10-14 record, raising questions about Arenado’s future with the team.

Last offseason, the Cardinals attempted to trade Arenado but the deal never materialized. He was the only veteran who showed willingness to waive his no-trade clause for the right circumstance, specifically a move to the Houston Astros. However, negotiations fell apart, leaving Arenado back in St. Louis.

In a recent interview with MLB.com, Arenado expressed uncertainty about his future with the club, stating, “I don’t know. We’ll see. We are playing hard right now. I think we are doing a good job. Hopefully, we can get on a winning streak here.” He indicated that if the team continues to struggle, a decision about his role might need to be made.

Despite the uncertainty, Arenado’s performance at the plate has improved this season. He is currently batting .268 with a .375 on-base percentage and has eight extra-base hits in 22 games. This rebound has drawn interest from potential trade suitors, especially following a disappointing 2024 season.

Arenado’s defensive skills remain elite; according to Statcast metrics, he ranks in the 95th percentile among fielders, indicating he can still make a significant impact defensively. His contract remains a consideration, with approximately $60 million due through 2027. The previous trade discussions included the Cardinals potentially absorbing part of that salary.

As teams eye the trade market, Arenado’s name is often mentioned. The Philadelphia Phillies, who need help at third base, may see him as an upgrade. Meanwhile, the Cardinals’ position in the standings is precarious, which could prompt them to consider all options as the July trade deadline approaches.

With potential candidates for a trade lineup forming, the next few months will be crucial in shaping Arenado’s fate and that of the Cardinals.
