North Carolina’s Jake Knapp Dominates in 8-3 Win Over Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – North Carolina‘s senior captain Jake Knapp delivered a stellar performance on the mound, leading the No. 4 Tar Heels to an 8-3 victory over No. 2 Florida State on Thursday night. Knapp pitched a complete game, allowing just four hits and three runs while striking out seven and not walking a single batter.
This win marks the Tar Heels’ highest-ranked victory of the season, and their first top-five win since 2022. The game drew national attention as it showcased a matchup between two of the ACC’s best pitchers, with Knapp holding the conference’s best ERA and victories record.
Knapp, who missed last season due to injury, now boasts an impressive 11-0 record, ranking him among the top starting pitchers in the nation. “I’m just so proud of him,” North Carolina head coach said after the game. “He set the tone for us like he’s done all year.”
The Tar Heels quickly established their offensive presence, with Gavin Gallaher hitting a leadoff home run in the second inning. Their momentum continued to build, and a pivotal two-run triple by Jackson Van De Brake in the fifth inning opened the game wide, extending the lead for UNC.
Florida State’s pitcher Jamie Arnold struggled, giving up four earned runs, while the Tar Heels took advantage of several defensive lapses. Despite a late two-run homer by Florida State’s Alex Lodise, the Seminoles could not close the gap. “Knapp pitched a beautiful game,” said FSU head coach Link Jarrett, acknowledging Knapp’s dominance.
As they look ahead, both teams are gearing up for the second game of the series, with the rematch scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. ET. The Tar Heels aim to continue their winning streak, while the Seminoles look to bounce back.
