No. 6 North Carolina Tops East Carolina 11-6 in Tense Clash

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — In a thrilling Sunday afternoon showdown, No. 6 North Carolina defeated East Carolina 11-6, overcoming an early deficit at Boshamer Stadium. Despite a robust offense from ECU, the Tar Heels rallied late, scoring six unanswered runs to secure the victory and clinch the series.
The Pirates came into the game hoping to capitalize on their offensive momentum, having recently recorded significant runs. They initially fell behind 3-0 in the first inning after North Carolina’s Luke Stevenson hit a three-run homer, but ECU responded with four runs to pull ahead 4-3.
As the game progressed, ECU took a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning only to see North Carolina storm back. Hunter Stokely led the charge for the Tar Heels with four hits and three RBIs, earning player of the game honors. His timely contributions were pivotal as North Carolina recorded a total of 13 hits in the contest.
“We take the lead, give up the lead, and then we take it back,” East Carolina head coach Cliff Godwin said. “Our guys fought. Unfortunately, we didn’t do enough to win. They’re a good team, and we need Pirate Nation to pack that place.”
East Carolina, now 2-4, showcased resilience through their ten hits, including notable performances from infielder Alex Bouche and catcher Michael Kalinich. Bouche hit a two-run homer, while Kalinich drove in runs with critical doubles. “We’re going to continue to play freshmen,” Godwin added, highlighting the team’s youth and potential for growth.
North Carolina maintained pressure with effective pitching from Folger Boaz, who secured the win with no runs in 3.1 innings and struck out three batters. The Tar Heels also benefited from a strong offensive showing that saw them drawing nine walks throughout the game.
“Baseball teaches you more about life than any other sport,” Godwin reflected. “You can do everything right and still come up short. It hurts. But we’re excited to go back to Greenville tomorrow.”
Looking ahead, ECU will seek to regroup in the series finale against North Carolina, scheduled for Monday at 5 p.m. at Clark-LeClair Stadium. Aiden Haugh will start on the mound for the Tar Heels in a bid to complete the series sweep, while the Pirates aim to salvage a game in front of their home fans.
