The Australian music community is mourning the loss of renowned Sydney singer-songwriter, musical director, and choirmaster Jack Colwell, who passed away last week at the age of 34. Colwell was celebrated for his theatrical performances and emotive musical style, often pushing the boundaries of opera and pop to their extremes.

Colwell’s live performances were described by some as transformative, with The Guardian describing him as a “one-man séance” who reached striking operatic highs and explored gut-wrenching, primal lows. His unique style was not only auditory but visual, presenting himself as an eclectic blend of romantic hero and avant-garde artist.

Throughout his career, Colwell collaborated with several notable artists, including Sarah Blasko and Patrick Wolf. His contributions to the music scene were encapsulated in his 2020 debut album, “Swandream,” where he confronted themes of darkness and trauma. Friends and colleagues remember him as fiercely loyal, a characteristic echoed by his extensive work in supporting emerging artists and enriching the queer music community in Sydney.

Comedian and radio host Gen Fricker recalled Colwell’s uninhibited spirit from their high school days at Sydney’s Conservatorium. “He was out and flamboyant at 14,” Fricker said, highlighting his early self-assuredness. Their friendship continued to flourish over the years, with Fricker contributing vocals to Colwell’s early projects.

Colwell’s prominence in the queer music scene is fondly remembered by fellow musician Brendan Maclean, who spoke of their mutual experiences as out gay artists at a time when it was less common. “Where I concerned myself with sounding and looking pretty,” Maclean said, “he was unafraid to bark, belt and scream.”

Colwell’s career included landmark performances, such as a sold-out show at the Sydney Opera House backed by a string quartet and collaborations with Blasko and Wolf. Additionally, he worked with international acts, including arranging for an Avalanches tribute at the Opera House and serving as a chorus coordinator for Karen O‘s “Stop the Virgens” at Vivid Sydney 2013.

A passionate educator, Colwell invested much time teaching music to children across Sydney. He also contributed significantly to community projects, such as his role as musical director for the vibrant Sydney choir. This legacy of inclusivity and artistic community building is remembered as a core part of his life and work.

Despite challenges as an independent artist in Australia, Colwell remained optimistic about his future projects, including a sequel to his debut album, “Swandream.” As the music community reflects on his untimely passing, it is clear that Colwell’s contributions to both music and community left an indelible mark, ensuring that his legacy will endure.
