Notre Dame’s Pat Coogan Steps Up as Key Leader After Teammate’s Injury
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame senior center Pat Coogan has emerged as a pivotal leader for the Fighting Irish football team after stepping into the role following a teammate’s season-ending injury, sources confirmed to On3.
Coogan, a 13-game starter in 2024, became a cornerstone of Notre Dame’s offensive line, which helped running back Jeremiyah Love rush for 1,125 yards this season. The Palos Heights, Ill., native has started 26 career games, playing both center and left guard.
“Coogs is an unbelievable leader,” Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said. “He is passionate about this place. He is passionate about his position. Never complained about his role, just worked, and now he’s starting center and battling.”
Coogan’s rise to prominence came after junior center Ashton Craig suffered a torn ACL during Notre Dame’s Week 3 win at Purdue. Craig was injured when a stray body collided with his knee during a block, sidelining him for the season and opening the door for Coogan to take over.
In 2024, Coogan allowed just eight quarterback pressures and one sack, showcasing his reliability and skill. Known for his fiery pregame speeches, including one before the Sugar Bowl where he passionately declared, “It’s God, it’s country, it’s motherf—ing Notre Dame,” Coogan has become a fan favorite and a vocal leader for the team.
The senior center, who was a three-star recruit out of high school, has one year of eligibility remaining. His journey from backup to starter highlights his resilience and dedication to the program.
