2024 NRLW Season Kicks Off with Expectations High for Knights

The NRLW is back in action as the seventh season kicks off tonight, with the reigning champions, the Knights, squaring off against the Roosters in Newcastle.

After a successful campaign last year, where they lifted the trophy, the Knights have retained most of their squad, thanks in part to multi-year contracts introduced in 2023. Nita Maynard, a key player from the premiership-winning team, shared that the pre-season has been smooth, despite a coaching change. Ben Jeffries is now at the helm, having previously coached the Cowboys and the PNG women’s national team.

Maynard expressed confidence in the team’s consistency, saying, “We’re under no illusion that we are the hunted.” She acknowledged the challenge of being back-to-back premiers and stressed the importance of pride and performance at home.

The Knights are anticipating a tough and physical encounter with the Roosters. Maynard emphasized the pride Newcastle has as a hardworking community and how that is reflected in their style of play. She believes that playing in front of supportive fans at their home ground will give them an edge.

As for the season, the Roosters and the Titans are seen as strong contenders alongside the Knights. Both teams have managed to keep their talented rosters intact from last season, setting the stage for a competitive race.

The Roosters recently welcomed back a veteran player, Sam Bremner, who is coming out of retirement to fill in at fullback after Corban Baxter suffered an ACL injury. Bremner, a former Jillaroo, is already making waves, as she was named the fittest player in the pre-season despite her short return to the squad.

The game promises excitement with players like Tamika Upton of the Knights, who was named the Dally M Medal winner in 2023 and has a stellar track record with multiple premierships. She is considered one of the top players, and her performance may be crucial for the Knights in their quest for a third straight title.

For the Roosters, Isabelle Kelly will be starting at fullback this week, but Bremner’s fitness suggests she may play a significant role later in the season.

Looking at rising stars, Teagan Berry, who was the leading try-scorer last year and part of the NSW training squad, is also one to watch. Meanwhile, young talents like Harmony Crichton and Natasha Penitani are making their NRLW debuts this weekend, generating excitement among fans.

Crichton, sister of Bulldogs captain Stephen, will be looking to carve her own path in the league, as will Penitani, who is following in the footsteps of her sister Tiana, the Sharks captain. Their hard work during the pre-season has earned them starting spots, and their teammates are eager to see what they can bring to the field.
