Nwsl Match Barbra Banda Incident

HARRISON, New Jersey – March 24, 2025 – The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has launched an investigation into an incident involving hateful language aimed at Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda during a match against Gotham FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Sunday.

The incident, which occurred during Orlando’s 2-0 victory, has drawn swift condemnation from both Gotham FC and the NWSL, who stated, “This behavior is unacceptable and has no place in our league or in our stadiums.” Security personnel acted promptly upon receiving reports of the abusive comments, addressing the responsible individual and monitoring the situation for the remainder of the match.

In a joint statement on Monday, Gotham FC leaders expressed their support for Banda, stating, “We will always work to protect and reinforce the inclusive spirit of our Gotham FC and NWSL community.” The club has also reached out to the Orlando Pride to apologize for the incident and discuss next steps.

The NWSL affirmed its commitment to provide safe and respectful environments for all players, noting that Banda is “both an exceptional player and person.” The league reiterated its dedication to holding individuals accountable for any actions that breach its Fan Code of Conduct.

According to reports from a Gotham season ticket holder, several fans in their section directed “bigotry” towards Banda, including racist and transphobic language. One witness noted that a security guard confronted a fan who shouted derogatory remarks about Banda’s presence on the field but issued only a warning.

The NWSL’s Fan Code of Conduct prohibits “threatening, abusive, or discriminatory words, signs, symbols, or actions,” underscoring the league’s stance against discrimination in any form. Gotham FC is currently reviewing security footage and has been in contact with fans who reported the incident online.

“We are committed to ensuring that our venues are safe and respectful environments for all—especially for the athletes who represent the very best of our sport,” the NWSL concluded. Orlando Pride stated it will cooperate with NWSL and Gotham to take necessary actions in adherence to league standards.

Banda participated fully in the match, contributing to the Pride’s continued undefeated streak in the 2025 NWSL season. The team is set to face the San Diego Wave on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for noon at Inter&Co Stadium.
