Oakland Athletics to Temporarily Play in West Sacramento Before Las Vegas Move
The Oakland Athletics have announced their decision to make West Sacramento their temporary home for the next three MLB seasons, commencing in 2025, before eventually relocating to Las Vegas. This move comes as the lease at the Oakland Coliseum is set to expire post the 2024 season, with a potential for extending it for a fourth season.
During a press conference held on Thursday, A’s Owner and Managing Partner John Fisher expressed the team’s enthusiasm for playing at the picturesque Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. Fisher highlighted the intimate setting of the ballpark, which is anticipated to witness captivating moments like home runs from star players like Aaron Judge.
While the A’s were in discussions with the city of Oakland and Alameda County to extend the contract at the Oakland Coliseum, recent reports indicated that both parties were distant from reaching an agreement, prompting the decision to move to West Sacramento for the interim period.
Sutter Health Park, currently home to the River Cats, the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate owned by Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé, will now host the Oakland Athletics for the next three baseball seasons. The Sacramento River Cats had previously been affiliated with the Oakland Athletics from 2000 to 2014 before transitioning to a San Francisco Giants affiliate in 2015.
Barry Broome, the CEO and President of the Greater Sacramento Economic Council, emphasized the commitment to providing players and fans with a delightful baseball experience at Sutter Health Park. Broome also hinted at aspirations for securing a permanent Major League Baseball franchise in the future.
The A’s long-term plan involves relocating to a new stadium to be constructed on the Las Vegas Strip, with substantial public financing amounting to $380 million approved by the Nevada government. However, the team requires a temporary home until the new ballpark’s completion, which is estimated to be no earlier than 2027.
West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero expressed confidence in hosting the A’s and mentioned the city’s readiness for the milestone moment. Guerrero highlighted the extensive preparations made by West Sacramento, emphasizing a collective effort to ensure the success of the temporary relocation.
Rooted in the team’s history, the Oakland Athletics will be transitioning to their third home with the move to Las Vegas, following stints in Philadelphia from 1901-1954 and Kansas City for 13 seasons before settling in the vibrant state of California.
