Ohio State Buckeyes Hire Bill O’Brien as Offensive Coordinator
Ohio State is shaking up their coaching staff by bringing in experienced coordinator Bill O’Brien. According to sources, Ohio State has hired former NFL head coach Bill O’Brien as their new offensive coordinator. The move is seen as a potential shift in the program, as head coach Ryan Day has been considering giving up playcalling duties.
O’Brien has a wealth of experience in both college and the NFL. He worked with notable quarterbacks such as Tom Brady, Bryce Young, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba during his time as the offensive coordinator at Alabama. Young won the Heisman Trophy under O’Brien’s guidance, and Alabama’s offense thrived, averaging over 40 points per game.
O’Brien also brings experience in the Big Ten, having served as the head coach at Penn State. He was noted for his recruiting skills and ability to stabilize the program in the aftermath of Jerry Sandusky’s crimes.
The hiring of O’Brien signals significant changes within the Ohio State program. Prior to the move, Day decided not to bring back safeties coach Perry Eliano and special teams coach Parker Fleming. The program has also seen many draft-eligible players choose to return for another season.
On offense, key players such as wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, running back TreVeyon Henderson, and guard Zach Harrison have all decided to return. These players were previously considered NFL prospects.
Additions through the transfer portal have also bolstered Ohio State’s roster. Quarterback Max Johnson from LSU and running back Snoop Conner from Ole Miss have joined the Buckeyes for the upcoming season.
With O’Brien now on board as the offensive coordinator, it remains uncertain what role Brian Hartline, the previous offensive coordinator, will have within the coaching staff.
