Ohio State’s Knowles Focused on CFP Amid Oklahoma DC Rumors
ATLANTA — Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles addressed rumors linking him to Oklahoma‘s defensive coordinator vacancy on Saturday, emphasizing his focus on the College Football Playoff. Knowles, whose Buckeyes face Notre Dame in the national championship game Monday, dismissed speculation about his future during Media Day.
“Notre Dame, that’s all I’m focused on,” Knowles said. “You are right, these things happen, I guess, when you have success. And players are making plays, and my job is to put them in the best position. But, everybody, these things come up when you do well.”
Oklahoma is searching for a new defensive coordinator after Zac Alley departed for West Virginia following one season in Norman. The Sooners, led by head coach Brent Venables, are looking to bolster a defense that ranked No. 31 nationally in 2023. Knowles, a veteran coach with nearly 40 years of experience, has emerged as a potential candidate.
Knowles, who has been Ohio State’s defensive playcaller since 2022, led the Buckeyes to the No. 1 ranking in scoring defense and total defense this season. His 4-2-5 defensive scheme and head coaching experience at Cornell (2004-09) make him an attractive option for Oklahoma. Additionally, Knowles has personal ties to the state, having recently gotten engaged to a woman from Oklahoma.
“Beat Notre Dame, that’s all I’m focused on,” Knowles reiterated. “These things happen, I guess, when you have success, players are making plays. My job is to put them in the best position. These things come up when you do well.”
Oklahoma has already made strides in rebuilding its defense, landing star edge rusher Marvin Jones Jr. from Florida State through the NCAA transfer portal. Knowles’ potential arrival could further strengthen the Sooners’ defensive unit and allow Venables to transition into a more CEO-like role.
The Buckeyes, meanwhile, are preparing for their biggest game of the season. Knowles’ defense, which also ranked No. 3 in rush defense, will face a Notre Dame offense led by quarterback Sam Hartman. Ohio State is seeking its first national championship since 2014.
Knowles’ coaching journey includes stints as defensive coordinator at Duke, Western Michigan, and Oklahoma State (2018-21). His success at Ohio State has made him one of the most sought-after defensive minds in college football.
