Ohio State Linebacker Sonny Styles 2024 Game Action

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles announced Friday that he will return for his senior season, bypassing the 2025 NFL draft. The decision bolsters the Buckeyes’ defense, which is set to lose at least eight starters, including all five in its front six.

Styles, who transitioned from safety to linebacker this past season, started all 16 games for the Buckeyes. He recorded 100 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, five pass breakups, and one forced fumble. His performance peaked during the College Football Playoff, where he tallied 24 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, and two pass breakups.

“Sonny has been a cornerstone of our defense,” said Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. “His decision to stay is huge for our team. He’s a leader on and off the field, and we’re excited to see him grow even more.”

Styles’ return provides stability to a defense that will feature rising star Caleb Downs. Additionally, Styles could potentially play alongside his older brother, Lorenzo Styles Jr., who is projected to replace Jordan Hancock as Ohio State’s top nickel cornerback next season.

While Styles and running back Quinshon Judkins have announced their decisions to stay, cornerback Davison Igbinosun has yet to reveal his plans. Judkins, a key offensive player, also confirmed Friday that he will return for another season.

Styles’ decision to stay could further elevate his NFL draft stock. Analysts note that while he excelled in his first year as a linebacker, he still has room to improve, particularly in pass coverage. “Another year of experience will only help him,” said NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. “He’s got the physical tools, and now he can refine his game.”

Ohio State fans celebrated the news on social media, with many expressing excitement about the team’s prospects for the 2025 season. Styles’ leadership and experience will be critical as the Buckeyes aim to compete for a national championship.
