Ohio State Star Cotie McMahon Enters Transfer Portal After NCAA Exit

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Cotie McMahon, a standout forward for the Ohio State women’s basketball team, officially entered the transfer portal on Wednesday after three successful seasons with the Buckeyes. The announcement was made by Ohio State Athletics Associate Director Maria Slovikovski.
The 6-foot forward from Centerville High School led Ohio State in scoring this past season, averaging 16.5 points per game, and was recognized as a first-team All-Big Ten selection for the second consecutive year. She also garnered All-Big Ten honors following her freshman year in 2023, where she was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
McMahon’s decision to transfer follows a disappointing end to the Buckeyes’ season, as they fell to the Tennessee Volunteers 82-67 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. McMahon expressed her frustration over the team’s early exit, which marked only the second time in her tenure that Ohio State advanced past the second round. In her freshman year, the Buckeyes reached the Elite Eight.
Throughout her career at Ohio State, McMahon maintained impressive statistics, averaging 15.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. She also has one season of eligibility remaining and is projected to be a first-round pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft.
The loss to Tennessee underscored the challenges Ohio State faced this season, finishing with a strong overall record of 26-7. The Buckeyes led the game early but were ultimately undone by Tennessee’s ability to capitalize on turnovers, scoring 37 points off mistakes made by Ohio State. The Volunteers will continue to the Sweet 16, scheduled to face the winner of the Texas vs. Illinois matchup on March 29.
In the NCAA Tournament match, Ohio State’s Jaloni Cambridge led the team with 19 points, while McMahon contributed 17 points. The Buckeyes were plagued by turnovers, allowing Tennessee to build a significant lead as the game progressed.
Following the defeat, Ohio State Head Coach Kevin McGuff reiterated the importance of refocusing for future challenges and preparing for success in the upcoming seasons. Meanwhile, McMahon’s transfer could signal a new chapter in her athletic career as she seeks to continue her development in a different program.
