Edmonton Oilers Evander Kane John Klingberg Playoffs

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Edmonton Oilers will have veteran forward Evander Kane and defenseman John Klingberg back in their lineup for Game 2 of the Western Conference first-round series against the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night. Kane, who has not played since June 10, 2024, due to recovery from multiple surgeries, is set to make his season debut in a crucial playoff match.

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed the news on Tuesday, stating Kane has been cleared for action after recovering from surgeries to repair a sports hernia, two torn hip adductors, and additional lower abdominal muscles. He also underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in January. “Kane is a possibility of coming back, whether that’s for Game 2, Game 3, or Game 4,” Knoblauch said. “But it should be soon.”

Kane’s presence is expected to bring an offensive spark to the Oilers’ lineup. Last season, he registered 44 points (24 goals, 20 assists) over 77 games during the regular season and contributed eight points in 20 playoff games. Kane had a standout performance in the 2022 playoffs, leading all players with 13 goals in just 15 games.

Alongside Kane, Klingberg will also return to help shore up an Oilers defense that struggled in the series opener. Klingberg has not played since March 27 due to a lower-body injury. The Oilers hope he can provide stability and offensive support from the blue line. “Yes, he definitely can be a player for us coming in Game 2,” Knoblauch noted. “Whether we make that decision tomorrow, but I would say we will see him at some point in the series.”

Game 1 saw the Oilers suffer a 6-5 loss to the Kings. The team aims to even the series and capitalize on the return of two key players. Knoblauch’s decisions in Game 2 are critical as the Oilers look to bounce back and maintain their championship hopes.
